NSW Refugee Network

Children in detention
We are Amnesty members and activists who share a concern for the welfare and human rights of the many displaced, persecuted and uprooted people of the world – asylum seekers and refugees, wherever they may be.
What we do:
We regularly meet, share opinions, news and ideas, and mould our campaigns to the ever-changing demands of the refugee scene in Australia and the rest of the world. We regularly collaborate with Amnesty's National Refugee Team (there are six sister networks in the other state capitals and in Canberra), sharing resources and ideas online. And we contribute to global refugee campaigns initiated by Amnesty’s International Secretariat in London.
When and where we meet:
- Our next meeting is at 6.30pm, Thursday 27th March 2011 at the Action Centre - ALL WELCOME
- Please email nswrefugeeteam@amnesty.org.au to subscribe to our newsletter or if you would like to be involved in any way
If you are only able to do one thing to raise your awareness of refugee issues, make sure it is to listen to Dr Eileen Pittaway's excellent lecture . We have included the link below - just click on it and listen, even if it's 10 minutes at a time. It's about one hour in total and it dispels so many of the common myths about refugees and why they come to Australia in leaky boats. Dr Pittaway is the Director of the Refugee Research Centre at UNSW. Visit the Refugee Centre website for a goldmine of information on refugee issues.
NEWS:
- High Court challenge made against offshore detention: A great step forward.
- Dr Eileen Pittaway's excellent lecture: "Innocent victims, Illegal Migrants, or Political Pawns" is now available online.
