Charters Towers: communication making a difference
As part of their activism activities, the Charters Towers action group holds a community stall at their local Christmas Fair and Community days to raise awareness on several issues, particularly on women’s rights.
Handing out flyers, getting petitions signed and talking to people about human rights is how the group makes a difference.
“Community engagement is the key to making a difference” Ms Coffison said.
The community event stall has proved to be a great way to address the public, gather signatures and meet people.
“Making a difference on issues such as women’s rights can ultimately stem from engaging in dialogue with the community. Open dialogue is extremely important and it is for this reason, that we place such as huge emphasis on it.” Ms Coffison said.
In May this year, the group celebrated Amnesty’s 50th Anniversary at the CWA Hall in Charters Towers. The dinner had an international flavour, with everyone bringing a plate of food from around the world. “It was a success.” Ms Coffison said.
The Charters Towers group is always seeking new members to help make a difference in their local community. If you’re in the region and want to get on board, the group would be more than happy to accommodate you.
