Finances
Amnesty International Australia (AIA) took the strategic decision to run a deficit budget in 2008 in order to use surpluses from previous years to increase our human rights campaigning here and internationally. We invested in new technology to help our long-term sustainability and our financial position remains strong.
The following information details our financial highlights. Our annual financial reports are also available to download below.
Financial Report 2008
The following chart represents AIA's income statement for the year to 31 December 2008.

Total revenue: $19,090,674 Total expenses: $20,481,810
Growth
We recruited nearly 10,000 new Human Rights Defenders, reaching a total of almost 48,000 at the end of 2008. In addition we have more than 15,500 members. The total supporter base driving and supporting our campaigns and activism was approximately 80,000.
Face-to-face fundraising remains our most cost-effective way of engaging with the Australian community.
Strength and Governance
Contributions from our Human Rights Defenders increased by more than 6 per cent during the year, thanks to generous giving from our supporters.
Our mail appeals generated income of more than $1.25 million and continue to communicate information about current campaigns and human rights issues.
Our investments were affected by a decline in value in line with general market trends. All are with Australian Ethical Investments.
In 2008 we embarked on a consultation on Amnesty International Australia’s 2014 vision and human rights impact areas. Close to 2000 supporters and staff participated in consultation, and their input was invaluable in helping to inform our priorities and impact areas.
International leadership
We are a substantial contributor to the wider Amnesty International community and in 2008 contributed more than $4.2 million to the global movement to assist with vital campaigning and research work.
A lasting gift
Amnesty International Australia would like to acknowledge the 21 individuals and their family members who left a lasting gift through a bequest in their will during 2008. This is a very special way to ensure your values are heard and your beliefs represented beyond your lifespan. This gift helps ensure the human rights protection of future generations.
