2009 was a tough year for many charities. The global financial crisis meant that many people were more cautious with their money. But despite the big challenges we had a solid year of growth.

The following information details our financial highlights. Our annual financial reports are also available to download below.

The following chart represents AIA's income statement for the year to 31 December 2009.

Growth

We recruited more than 16,000 new Human Rights Defenders, giving a total of nearly 52,000. Our membership stands at almost 14,000 members and the total financial supporter base driving and supporting our work has increased to 85,000.

Face-to-face fundraising remains our most cost-effective way of engaging with the Australian community.

Democracy and Governance

Contributions from Human Rights Defenders increased by 11 per cent during 2009, reflecting our continued success in engaging with the community.

The financial performance of our investments improved, providing us with a significant unrealised gain at the end of 2009. All investments held by Amnesty International Australia are with Australian Ethical Investment.

Our administration costs remain low at 4 per cent of total expenditure.

During 2009 we consulted supporters about ways to strengthen our democracy. Key changes were subsequently endorsed at the National Extraordinary General Meeting in November 2009 that will provide more people with more opportunities to participate in Amnesty International Australia’s governance.

A lasting gift

Our income was boosted by a $1.4 million bequest from the estate of Mary Missen, the wife of the late Senator Alan Missen. We are thankful for this extraordinary gift and for the level of passion the Missens had for protecting human rights.

The Missen bequest led to a 2009 surplus of $1.1 million rather than an anticipated deficit and provides us with greater capacity to achieve life-saving human rights impact.
