Our vision, goals and strategy
Our vision
Our Global Vision Statement underpins the work of the entire worldwide movement of Amnesty International, and provides a framework for the operation of all Amnesty International Sections.
The goals which Amnesty works towards in Australia are set by our Board and Senior Management Team with vital input from our supporters.
Our goals
- Demand Dignity for Indigenous Australians and those living in poverty around the world.
- Increase our support for the global movement: this includes providing financial assistance, coaching and support to smaller national Sections in our region like Japan and South Korea, as well as facilitating trans-national advocacy and campaigning.
- Respond rapidly to international crises and individuals at risk. This includes reactive work to situations arising in the Middle East and North Africa.
- Campaign for the lawful and humane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia and across the globe.
- Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Amnesty International movement.
- Inspire 300,000 people to take action for human rights.
Our strategy
The development of our Integrated Strategic Plan for 2010 to 2016 (PDF 198kb) was the primary focus of the 2009 International Council Meeting. This plan was developed based on analysis on external trends, our own organisational strength and weakness and our ability to achieve human rights impact. The plan was developed with crucial input from employees, volunteers, members and public stakeholders.
This strategy sets priorities and guides each of the national Amnesty International Sections across the globe. Individual Sections like Amnesty International Australia operate within this framework and prioritise specific issues relevant to our region and our members.
The key directions of the international movement are:
Human rights change
- Empower people living in poverty
- Defending vulnerable people on the move
- Defending people from violence by state and non-state actors
- Protecting freedom of expression and freedom from discrimination
Partnerships
- Growing and developing the global human rights movement
- Building effective partnerships
- Promoting human rights to propose and create solutions for governments
Excellence
- Promoting active participation by our members and supporters
- Linking local activism with the global movement
- Responding to emerging challenges and opportunities
Invest to learn and grow
- Invest in volunteers, staff, leadership and systems
- Governing our Sections and structures effectively
- Making diversity and gender mainstreaming a reality
- Leveraging technology to enable change
Resources
- Building new constituencies and renewing membership
- Increasing our donors and growing our resources
- Distributing resources strategically

I hope that Australia is bringing diplomatic pressure to bear in the fight against this prehistoric legislation.
