One year on: let’s close Guantanamo Bay

© US Dept of DefenceMore than 15,000 kilometres away, on a small stretch of land in south-eastern Cuba, 196 men sit imprisoned. Many have been there for five, six, seven, eight years. None have been properly tried for their crimes, and despite promises made, their future remains as uncertain as ever.
The detention centre at Guantanamo Bay has come to symbolise a moral, legal and security failure in the so-called ‘war on terror’. One year ago we celebrated President Obama’s pledge to finally close it, and put years of reviled abuses behind us. Now more than ever, his administration needs the world’s action and support to carry through this promise.

Dear Prime Minister,
As an ally in the so-called 'war on terror', please ensure Australia helps close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
Australia should be part of the humanitarian solution by offering resettlement to some of the detainees who are cleared for release but cannot be returned to their own countries for fear that they would suffer torture or persecution there.
The petition will be hand delivered by Amnesty International Australia to Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
