LGBTQ Activist Hannah Lewis
Thousands of same sex couples in Australia wish to marry, but currently the law prevents them from doing so. Amnesty International ACT/SNSW has worked with Equal Love to campaign for same sex marriage in Australia. The highlight of the Equal Love calendar was the National Day of Action for same-sex marriage, which ACT/SNSW LGBTQ Activist Hannah Lewis spoke at.
Hannah spoke on the aim to change public attitudes towards LGBTQ relationships and to put pressure on the national government to legislate for equal marriage rights.
Amnesty has been actively engaged in LGBTQ rights since 1991, when Amnesty adopted a policy affirming that persecuting or discriminating against people on the basis of their sexuality is a violation of their basic human rights. The right to freely determine one's sexual orientation and the right to express it without fear are human rights.
