Regional Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Network (ACT/Southern NSW)

The Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQI) Network, is one of Amnesty International Australia's (AIA) special interest networks.

The Rainbow Shines Brighter at Amnesty International Australia!

About Us

As an organisation, Amnesty has been actively engaged in LGBTQI rights since 1991, when Amnesty adopted a policy affirming that persecuting or discriminating against people on the basis of their sexuality is a violation of their basic human rights. There is a long way to go.

In over 80 countries homosexuality is illegal; in seven of these it is punishable by death. Governments employ an array of repressive laws and practices to deprive LGBTQI citizens of their dignity and to deny them their basic rights. The right to freely determine one's sexual orientation and the right to express it without fear are human rights.

Gay rights abuse occurs all over the world. Whilst many other human rights are being mainstreamed into a human rights discourse, gay rights are lagging behind. As Australians who can safely organise, we need to take steps to help our fellow LGBTQI friends abroad. Network members are volunteers and meet monthly to discuss current cases of human rights abuses and take action to prevent further abuses.

Now Recruiting - Exciting Opportunity to work with Amnesty International

We want you!

LGBTQI Assistant (Updated)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a passionate and capable volunteer to work with the community campaigner and existing LGBTQI convenor to organise and implement LGBTQI action campaigns. The role will suit a full-time working professional, university student and any individual interested in advancing LGBTQI Rights.

This role will involve advocacy on LGBTQI issues through organising public events, conducting research for action alerts and awareness campaigns, creating petitions, speaking at public forums, media relations, youth advocacy at universities and schools and online advocacy with other Amnesty LGBTQI campaigners across Australia. As a relatively new action network, we are in the stages of developing our team of supporters and activists. Thus, engaging new LGBTQI rights defenders and creating action plans to develop this growing network will be integral part of the role.

While the current focus and future plans of the network revolve around the core themes of Decriminalising Homosexuality (including the Death Penalty), Discrimination and Equality, and Homosexuality in Rural Communities, you will also have the opportunity to make your own mark and run your own campaigns.

Key Selection Criteria – LGBTQI Assistant
  • Possess an understanding of current LGBTQI advocacy themes such as: Decriminalising Homosexuality (including the Death Penalty); Gender Identity and Expression; Homosexuality in Rural Communities; Discrimination and Equality; Torture, Violence and Abuse; Marriage Equality; Health and Human Rights.

  • Familiarity with human rights advocacy through previous experience in organising events, information stalls, and petitions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding communication skills, including an ability to develop rapport and understanding with human rights defenders, members of the public and Amnesty supporters.

  • A proven ability to conduct research to support print and web publications, write media articles and communicate with supporters.

  • Capacity to work effectively within a team and to actively support team members.

  • High level of organisational and conceptual skills.

  • Willingness to engage in Amnesty International events and forums including the current Demand Dignity campaign, Human Rights for Australia, Refugees and others.

  • Some awareness of current online LGBTQI resources and computer skills is required.

The role is Canberra based and you should be available one or two afternoons a week at our AI Action Centre. Days and times are flexible, mutually agreed with the current convenor. While we are flexible with commencement dates, the ideal applicant will be available to commence as soon as possible and begin working on our current Homosexuality in Rural Communities campaign.

Your application should include:

  1. A Covering Letter; and
