UN votes to halt executions

In October, the UN General Assembly will consider a resolution calling for a global moratorium on executions, after 95 states signed or joined a statement presented by the European Union at the December 2006 session. The resolution calls on states that still maintain the death penalty to abolish it completely and, in the meantime, to establish a moratorium on executions.
