Join us for the Olympic Torch Relay in Canberra
On Thursday April 24 Amnesty International will be part of a peaceful presence at the Olympic Torch Relay in Canberra. Join us in our campaign to improve human rights in China.
Monkeys, candles, a positive stance for human rights. The plan is to gather at 8am at Reconciliation Place - the start of the relay route. We'll also be present at the finish of this leg - Commonwealth Park at approximately 12:30pm. Please join us at either spot. You can contact our Community Campaigner in Canberra or our Community Campaigns Assistant in NSW. We will update plans as necessary - based on receiving further info from Police etc.
If you’re coming from Sydney:
There is a bus departing at 4:30am from the NSW Action Centre - 79 Myrtle Street, Chippendale. This bus will return to Sydney on the same day, leaving Canberra at 3:00pm.
If you’re meeting us in Canberra we will be congregating at Reconciliation Place from 8:00am.
We will be engaging in a non-violent protest against human rights abuses in China.
You won't miss the Amnesty crowd - there will be life-size yellow candles and many Nu Wa's, the campaign mascot. We look forward to seeing you there! Wear black if you can - and we'll give you some Nu Wa ears or mask!
You can call 8396 7670 to book a place on the bus from Sydney.

Thats great that AI are joining togther with other groups on the day to support an end to the human right attrocites in China.
May i ask why you did not attend or support in any way the peaceful Human rights Global Torch Relay that came thru all major Australian cities late last year?
WE would have made much more progress at that time if we had AI attending all over the world.Media and our Governments would have taken much more notice too. And maybe the Ccp would not have been so bold to further its persecutions in the lead up to the Games.
I would appreciate your reply so we can rectify these problems so that we can save more peoples live. Isnt that what AI is all about?
Its definately what the Human Rights Relay Torch is all about…
