Chinese scientist and inventor Wo Weihan was sentenced to death in 2007 for espionage, but his daughter believes he may have confessed under torture and have had an unfair trial.

Journalist Jocelyn has put together a video report, which tells the story of Wo Wesihan – who has not yet been executed – and his daughter's efforts to free him.

Each year China executes hundreds of people, more than any other country. Nobody knows exactly how many people are executed, because the figure is a state secret.

Based on media reports Amnesty International estimates China executed at least 470 people last year – though the true figure is undoubtedly much higher. The lack of transparency means it's impossible to tell.

According to internal Communist Party documents, in the four years to 2001 authorities executed 60,000 people.

Nobody sentenced to death in China gets a fair trial in line with international standards. The Chinese system doesn't presume innocence. It uses evidence extracted under torture. It restricts defendants' access to lawyers. And it’s subject to political interference.
