Ron Walker will be discussing the topic of ‘Somalia – a Failed State’

Some background information on Somalia:

In the late 19th century after the Berlin conference, European empires sailed to the Horn of Africa. After one of the longest colonial resistance wars ever, British Somaliland was formed in the north and Italian Somaliland in the south. In 1960 they formed the newly independent nation of Somalia. In 1991 the authoritarian socialist government collapsed and the country descended into turmoil, factional fighting, and anarchy. In 1993 following severe famine, the UN began a relief program which was terminated in 1995 following significant casualties. Order still had not been restored.
