Iraq: Amnesty International calls for an investigation into death in custody of nine men

Amnesty International has written to Iraq's Interior Minister, Bayan Jabr Solagh, to call for a full investigation into the alleged torture of a group of men detained by Iraqi police on 10 July and the circumstances in which nine of them were suffocated to death after being confined in a police van or container.

Egypt: Amnesty International condemns bomb attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh

Amnesty International totally condemns the bomb attacks perpetrated on 23 July 2004 in the Egyptian Red Sea resort, Sharm el-Sheikh, which killed more than 80 people, most or all of them civilians, and injured at least 200 others. Most of the dead and injured were Egyptian civilians. At least eight foreign tourists were also killed.

UK: Full circumstances into fatal shooting must be investigated

Amnesty International is concerned about the incident on 22 July 2005 in which plainclothes officers shot dead Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian national who had been working in the UK for the last three years. Initial police statements stated that he was a suspect linked to the bombing incidents which have taken place in London, since over 50 people were killed in coordinated attacks on 7 July.

Iraq: Amnesty International condemns the killing of two diplomats

Amnesty International today strongly condemned the killing by an armed group of two Algerian diplomats, Ali Belaroussi and Azzeddine Belkadi. The two were kidnapped on 21 July 2005 as they were leaving the Algerian Embassy in Baghdad by car. The armed group, al-Qa'ida of Jihad Organization in the Land of Two Rivers, led by Jordanian national Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and the killing of the two diplomats.
