Reaction to Europe’s report on renditions
Publication of the Council of Europe's interim report on the issue of extraordinary renditions and secret detention centres in Europe is a step towards uncovering the truth about the extent to which US agents are carrying out renditions and related practices in Europe. However it makes clear that serious questions still need to be answered by a number of European governments.

Hundreds of Nigerians are still sleeping out in the open nearly nine months after bulldozers and armed police arrived in the Makoko community of Lagos, demolishing homes, churches, a mosque and a medical clinic. India: Excessive use of force against adivasi protestors in Orissa
Amnesty International is gravely concerned by reports of excessive use of force by police officials during a protest, on 2 January 2006, by indigenous people (adivasis) at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district, Orissa. At least twelve adivasis, including three women and a 12-year-old boy, were reportedly killed in the police firing and one policeman was reportedly killed by the adivasis.
Afghanistan: Amnesty International condemns the recent killing of civilians
Amnesty International condemns the recent wave of killings of civilians in southern Afghanistan, notably the 16 January suicide bomb attack on spectators at a sporting event in Spin Boldak, Kandahar province. According to reports, at least 22 people were killed and 20 injured by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle who blew himself up in a crowd attending a wrestling match.

Russian Federation: New law stifles independent civil society
Amnesty International regrets that President Putin has signed into law the controversial amendments to laws governing civil society organizations in Russia. The law was published by the official government newspaper Rossiiskaia gazeta on 17 January 2006 and will come into force in three months' time.
Iran: Amnesty International calls for end to death penalty for child offenders
Amnesty International is calling on the Iranian authorities to take immediate steps to end the use of the death penalty for child offenders. Two new cases have been reported in which child offenders - persons under 18 at the time of the crime - have been sentenced to death by Iranian courts, in breach of Irans obligations under international human rights law.
Brazil: recent killings of police in Sao Paulo
Amnesty International totally repudiates the recent wave of attacks against police officers in Sao Paulo. The last attack, which took place on 12 January, 2006, in Vila Maria, left one officer dead and two injured.
Guantanamo: Military commissions
On 11 January 2005, exactly four years after the first detainees were transferred to the US military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, pre-trial military commission proceedings commenced in the cases of Ali Hamza Ahmed Sulayman Al Bahlul and Omar Khadr.
