Israel’s use of white phosphorus confirmed
Amnesty International delegates visiting the Gaza Strip found indisputable evidence of widespread use of white phosphorus in densely populated residential areas in Gaza City and in the north.
"Yesterday, we saw streets and alleyways littered with evidence of the use of white phosphorus, including still burning wedges and the remnants of the shells and canisters fired by the Israeli army," said Christopher Cobb-Smith, a weapons expert who is in Gaza as part of a four-person Amnesty International fact-finding team.
"White phosphorus is a weapon intended to provide a smokescreen for troop movements on the battlefield," said Cobb-Smith. "It is highly incendiary, air burst and its spread effect is such that it that should never be used on civilian areas".
"Such extensive use of this weapon in Gaza's densely populated residential neighbourhoods is inherently indiscriminate. Its repeated use in this manner, despite evidence of its indiscriminate effects and its toll on civilians, is a war crime," said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty’s researcher on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
White phosphorus wedges are scattered all around residential buildings and many were still burning on Sunday, further endangering the residents and their property; streets and alleys are full of children playing, drawn to the detritus of war and often unaware of the danger.
"Artillery is an area weapon; not good for pinpoint targeting. The fact that these munitions, which are usually used as ground burst, were fired as air bursts increases the likely size of the danger area," said Chris Cobb-Smith.
Each 155mm artillery shell bursts deploying 116 wedges impregnated with white phosphorus which ignite on contact with oxygen and can scatter, depending on the height at which it is burst (and wind conditions), over an area at least the size of a football pitch. In addition to the indiscriminate effect of air-bursting such a weapon, firing such shells as artillery exacerbates the likelihood that civilians will be affected.
Amnesty International delegates found both burning white phosphorous wedges and their carrier shells (which delivered them) in and around houses and buildings. Some of these heavy steel 155mm shells have caused extensive damage to residential properties.
Among the places worst affected by the use of white phosphorus was the UNRWA compound in Gaza City, where Israeli forces fired three white phosphorus shells on 15 January. The white phosphorus landed next to some fuel trucks and caused a large fire which destroyed tons of humanitarian aid. Prior to this strike the compound had already been hit an hour earlier and the Israeli authorities had been informed by UNRWA officials and had given assurance that no further strikes would be launched on the compound.
In another incident on the same day a white phosphorus shell landed in the al-Quds hospital in Gaza City also causing a fire which forced hospital staff to evacuate the patients.
White phosphorus landing on skin can burn deep through muscle and into the bone, continuing to burn unless deprived of oxygen.
Background
Separate unilateral ceasefires announced by Israel and by Hamas with effect from 18 January were not respected by either side. Israeli forces remained stationed in several areas of the Gaza Strip and on the morning of 18 January missiles fired by Israeli forces killed 11-year-old Angham Rif’at al-Masri and injured her mother east of Beit Hanoun in the north of the Gaza Strip. At the same time Palestinian armed groups fired several rockets into towns and villages in southern Israel, lightly wounding three Israeli civilians.

Naomi - yes—use of these weapons on civilians defies comprehension in so many many ways. It is unfortunate that most media sources do nothing to inform the general public of the realities of these monstrous weapons.
People power - this is our voice and we need to do all we can to make it heard by those who perpetrate these hiddeous crimes against humanity.

The vast majority of global human rights groups ... claim that war crimes were committed during the conflict, including the use of white phosphorus in residential areas. The extensive use of white phosphorus in Gaza’s densely populated neighbourhoods, despite evidence of its indiscriminate effects and its toll on civilians, was a war crime, according to Amnesty International.

Graham, they’re hideous aren’t they?Makes you wonder what types of monsters create such weapons?I saw photos during the invasion of Lebanon in ‘06, of people whose bodies were blackened, including children.I had to stop looking! Cluster bombs are particularly hideous too, as not all the ‘droplets’ explode on impact - little kids mistake those not detonated for toys, and then lose their lives or limbs when they explode. Recent (2008?)conference saw the US and sadly Australia not vote to ban them.
I understand that doctors in Gaza stated that there’s evidence of the use of Depleted Uranium bombs - on bodies (morgue)and patients in hospital!
It’s been the people around the world who’ve spoken the loudest. It’s the only way the US and Israel will pay attention - people power!
Those who defend Israel are being proven on a daily basis to be over-ruled by the evidence, and those in Gaza who are reporting the atrocities that have taken place. Not all children are equal it seems!

Dr Nafiz Abu Shabaan pulls a plastic bag from under his desk. It is filled with white phosphorous, buried in sand. The brown pieces look like dog dirt, and re-ignite if broken open. Mahmoud al Jamal, 18, sits in the doctor’s office, his right ear congealed, his fingers and part of his chest eaten away by white phosphorous. The unsightly wounds make him look like a leper

THERE WERE MANY ways to die during the Israeli offensive on Gaza.
White phosphorous was another, much publicised means of death. Each M82581 artillery shell, manufactured by General Dynamics in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, bears the initials PB. And each of the 155mm shells contains 116 felt wafers soaked in phosphorus, which ignites on contact with oxygen. The phosphorous makes the white jellyfish-shaped clouds seen on television during the December 27th-January 17th Israeli offensive. It provides cover for advancing troops, but it also burns houses and people. If one of the felt pads lands on your skin, it burns until all the fuel is consumed, creating deep, wide, chemical burns, often to the bone.

Just some of the facts Israel tried to hide by refusing media freedoms;Read them people!
UN Says No Hamas Fighters Were in Bombed Gaza School:
United Nations investigators say they have uncovered no evidence to support a claim by the Israeli military that Hamas fighters were holed up in a Gaza school, prompting a deadly attack by Israeli forces that killed 40 civilians, many of them children.

Steve, what is a “terrorist group”?The US have not long removed Nelson Mandela from their ‘list’.A “terrorist group” is any group of people the US/West don’t agree with;usually people who have been oppressed and are getting in the way of the No.1 goal of capitalism;to make as much money as possible, with the minimum amount of accountability, whether it’s giving decent amounts to inhabitants and/or cleaning up their mess/es, and/or empire building. Many instances of this-Palestine is a concentrated proof of this.International Law gives oppressed people the right to resist. When Palestinians have equal chances of resistence re weapons, wealth and the West’s backing, then call it a war-until then,it’s an invasion of the bloodiest kind!$2 billion worth of damage to homes etc.Doctors are finding evidence of nuclear material/damage on the dead & injured-Depleted Uranium bombs as well as cluster bombs and phosphorus bombs Steve.Justify that!

Yes, HAMAS was democratically elected, and from the outset the US refused to recognize this.I’m not championing HAMAS’s cause,or condoning violence, but the people in the Middle East only act in anger by the US hypocrisy.HAMAS was ‘created’by Israel, who believed it would be good for FATAH to have an opposition.Look at the stats of those killed;the persistence of Israel to take increasing amounts of land;the Wall, the refusal to allow Palestinians to have free access to work, hospitals, schools etc.People in 1948 just rounded up and either murdered or forced to flee, without any hope of returning home. Even then Ariel Sharon had another go at them in Lebanon, using horrific violence. The stats are one-sided;lying is an art form by Israel!

White phosphorus – which can cause horrific injuries, and is heavily restricted in international law – is now widely accepted to have been used by Israel in this war.
Mahmoud was running from the heavy fighting between Hamas gunmen and Israeli forces in the southern Gaza city district of Tel Al Hawa when a shell dropped in front of him. “I could feel my whole body burning,” he said. “I fell and asked someone next to me to help. But he was dead. Then I fainted.” Part of his body was still smouldering when he was being anaesthetised in theatre. “A piece extracted itself from his body and burned the anaesthetist on his chest,” said Dr Shaban. Mahmoud will live; unconfirmed estimates are that dozens of others burned by phosphorus have not survived.

Spent shells prove Israeli use of white phosphorus, Gaza doctors say
A suspected phosphorus victim was taken from Gaza across the border into Egypt yesterday. Abdul Rahman Shaer, 16, was transferred to an Egyptian hospital from Rafah. He was suffering from severe chemical burns to his face and body. Paramedics from Gaza said that doctors at the hospital were sure the chemical agent was phosphorus.

It is difficult to convince a people that using missiles against innocent civillians is wrong when the response from those civillians is indescriminate use of weapons of mass destruction in civillian zones.
Urban warfare is never pretty, but every effort must be made to protect civillians from the boffins that insist on fighting. And if that means certain tactics or weapons are not allowed due to the potential threat to civillians then such rules must be enforced.
Would it be acceptable for Israel to just nuke the whole of gaza? No. Because it clearly fails to provide attempt to safeguard non-combatants… why then should the use of these weapons be allowed in a similar fashion?

Israeli illegal use of chemical weapon on civilians.
White phosphorus is fired into the air from airborne or land vehicles where it bursts into thousands of phosphorus crystals that form white-looking clouds. The crystals blow and fall gently down. But if they touch skin they burn into it, boring holes deep into the body without extinguishing. It will only stop burning when deprived of oxygen. An agonizing death is frequent. “...a three-year-old girl who had been extensively and deeply burned, in some places revealing the bones. The dead girl’s injuries were consistent with those attributed to the chemical weapon, doctors said.

James and Valerie
You are quite right to seek to avoid entrenched positions and find a way to reconciliation. I’m sure all people of goodwill seek that reconciliation. However, to truly bring reconciliation, it is often necessary to be able to distinguish right from wrong and to correct errant behaviour. It’s neither ethically correct, nor practically effective, to blur moral distinctions or to neglect the opportunity to try to correct injustice.
All the peace conferences and “land-for-peace” formulae, I suggest, are doomed to failure until the Arabs truly accept the restoration of Israel and seek to live with the revived ancient homeland of the Jewish people, in peace. Even when such acceptance is reached, it will require decades of effort to undo previous decades of incitement to hatred and martyrdom which Arab regimes have inculcated in their children from kindergarten onwards.
We should work for such acceptance and to un-learn the hatred.

Hamas and similar terrorist groups have conducted a campaign of suicide bombings, drive-by shootings, stabbings and rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli civilians since 2000. In that period, over 1,200 Israelis have been killed, 7,000 injured and 900,000 held to ransom and traumatised by this campaign of terrorism. Hamas knew exactly what it was doing when it terrorised Israeli children from behind its own children.

Claims that the Palestinian terrorism is a form of “resistance” to Israel’s blockade of Gaza and occupation of the West Bank are patently false. The blockade of Gaza, which Israel vacated entirely in 2005, was instituted only after Hamas’s bloody coup, to prevent it from threatening Israel. If Hamas were to accede to international calls to recognise Israel, renounce violence and accept prior agreements with the Palestinian Authority, there would be no blockade. Furthermore, Palestinian terrorism commenced long before the “occupation” of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967, and even before the establishment of the State of Israel.

Although Hamas was initially elected, it then took control of Gaza by force in a bloody coup, murdering over 100 of its political opponents. During and after the recent Israeli operation Hamas continued this brutal reign by torturing and executing Fatah members in the Gaza Strip. Nineteen Palestinians were murdered and more than 60 others were shot in the legs. Musa Abu Marzouk, a top Hamas official in Syria, confirmed that his movement had executed “collaborators” during the war.

James Fehon “However condemnation of Israel will always meet opposition.” Yes, why is that do you think?Like many others,I followed the media reports each evening, and was disgusted by the bias,by the Rudd Govt in Australia following the US line. While ever the US/Aust/Britain & others allow Israel to submit the Palestinian people to daily trauma, death, steal the bit of land they have, tear down their homes, farms, olive trees etc, there will be no end.I no longer have sympathy for Israel-the oppressed became the oppressors, and it makes me angry.HAMAS was democratically elected by the people. The US only recognizes democracy when their ‘man’ is elected.Protecting freedom & democracy?Huh!Ask the little kids with their eyes shot out by Israeli snipers?Legless babies!Women giving birth at borders and their babies dying from exposure?Civilized country? No way! It’s genocide!

It’s a PR war you could say - a war of perspectives, over who is right.
How to move on? Find middle ground. Attacking a perspective won’t change it.
Israel has a right to exist free from attack and Hamas also has serious abuses to answer for http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/regions/middle-east-and-north-africa/palestinian-authority. The point regarding white phosphorus remains but these two points would have made this statement less inflammatory.
I think reports like this need to be strongly worded so there’s a trade off here.

It’s true. The comments here demonstrate diametrically opposed (and impassioned) perspectives resulting in conflict. How do we move forward / make peace on any scale?
Whether it’s Amnesty or Israel, criticism in something you believe in is easy to react to.
Personally I think the perceived bias being discussed is justified (magnitude & impact of Palestinian and Israeli actions recently, combined with power dynamics historically). I come to the defence of an organisation in which I believe.
Condemnation of excessive force, or illegal use of weapons would probably be universally accepted here.
However condemnation of Israel will always meet opposition.
Amnety briefly mentioned the effects of Palestinian rockets, but was the purpose of these statements to offer a complete assesment of the ongoing conflict, or to condemn specific acts?
Is defending Israel claiming vindication overarchingly or defending these specific condemned acts?
