Israel must disclose weapons used in Gaza
Amnesty International today called on the Israeli authorities to disclose the weapons and munitions their forces used during the three week military campaign in Gaza which began on 27 December.
"We now know that white phosphorous munitions were used in built-up civilian areas, although the Israeli authorities previously denied this," said Donatella Rovera, who is heading an Amnesty International investigation team in Gaza. "Now we have irrefutable evidence of the use of this weapon, but the doctors who treated the first casualties did not know what had caused their injuries."
Other victims of the conflict have wounds which doctors say they are finding hard to treat because of uncertainty about the nature of the munitions which caused them.
"Doctors tell us they are encountering new and unexplained patterns of injury among some of the Palestinians injured in Israeli military attacks," said Donatella Rovera. "Some victims of Israeli air strikes were brought in with charred and sharply severed limbs and doctors treating them need to know what weapons were used."
Dr Subhi Skeik, head of the Surgical Department at al-Shifa Hospital, told Amnesty International delegates: "We have many cases of amputations and vascular reconstructions where patients would be expected to recover in the normal way. But to our surprise many of them died an hour or two after operation. It is dramatic."
"It is vital and urgent that the Israeli authorities disclose all relevant information including what weapons and munitions they used," said Donatella Rovera. "More lives must not be lost because doctors do not know what caused their patients' injuries and what medical complications may occur. They have to be fully informed so that they can provide life-saving care."
Israel's earlier refusal to confirm that its troops had used white phosphorus meant that doctors were unable to provide correct treatment. White phosphorous particles embedded in the flesh can continue to burn, causing intense pain as the burns grow wider and deeper, and can result in irreparable damage to internal organs. It can contaminate other parts of the patient's body or even those treating the injuries.
"We noticed burns different from anything we had ever dealt with before," one burns specialist at Gaza's al-Shifa Hospital told Amnesty International. "After some hours the burns became wider and deeper, gave off an offensive odour and then they began to smoke."
The condition of people with burns caused by white phosphorus can deteriorate rapidly. Even those with burns that cover a relatively small area of the body - 10 to 15 per cent - who would normally survive, can deteriorate and die. Only after a number of foreign doctors arrived in the Gaza Strip, days after they had seen the first casualties of white phosphorus, did local doctors learn what had caused the wounds and how to treat them.
A 16-year-old girl, Samia Salman Al-Manay'a, was asleep in her home in the Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza City, when a phosphorous shell landed on the first floor of the house at 8pm on 10 January. Ten days later, from her hospital bed, she told Amnesty International that she was still experiencing intense pain due to the burns to her face and legs. "The pain is piercing. It's as though a fire is burning in my body. It's too much for me to bear. In spite of all the medicine they are giving me the pain is still so strong."
Without knowing what they were, Palestinians whose houses were hit by phosphorous shells or burning debris from them, mistakenly threw water on the flames, only for the fire to intensify. When doctors, seemingly unaware, tried to wash patients' wounds with saline solutions, they screamed in pain. And when they changed the dressings on patients' burns they were shocked to see smoke rise from the wound. When they conducted investigative operations, they extracted small pieces of felt which started to burn immediately when they were exposed to the air.
"Israeli officials have repeatedly said that its military operation was against Hamas, not against the people of Gaza. There can be no excuse for continuing to withhold information vital to effective treatment of people wounded in Israeli attacks. Lack of cooperation by Israel is leading to needless deaths and unnecessary suffering," said Donatella Rovera. "The Israeli authorities should fulfil their obligation to ensure prompt and adequate care for the wounded by making a full disclosure of the weapons and munitions they used in Gaza and provide any other relevant information that may help medical teams."
Background
Some 1,300 Palestinians were killed between 27 December 2008 and the ceasefire declared by Israel on 18 January 2009, including more than 400 children and over 100 women. More than 5,300 Palestinians were injured; many will be disabled for the rest of their lives. In the same period, 13 Israelis were killed in attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups, including three civilians.

From AP, Jan 13, 2009, by BRADLEY S. KLAPPER:
GENEVA (AP) — The international Red Cross said Tuesday that Israel has fired white phosphorus shells in its offensive in the Gaza Strip, but has no evidence to suggest the incendiary agent is being used improperly or illegally.

Elka - sad you make such totally unsubstantiated, wild, irresponsible, hysterical claims. Just Google White Phosphorus and you will get hundreds of first hand accounts from people actually in Gaza on the receiving end of this horrific chemical weapon used indiscriminately, deliberately, premediated, i,e, with the Israeli military fully conscious of its effect on innocent women, men and children.
DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT WHITE PHOSPHORUS IS???? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA OF ITS EFFECT ON HUMAN BEINGS??? d US ALL A FAVOUR AND BECOME A LITTLE INFORMED BEYOND ALL THAT PROPAGANDA-SPEAK YOU PARROT MINDLESSLY.

Elka - The use of phosphorus is only lawful under international rules of engagement when used as a smokescreen cover in open areas for combatants who are caught in the open and are under fire. However, the evidence on the ground makes clear that the Israeli Army systematically and unlawfully fired phosphorus shells directly over and into populated urban areas.
Here is much first hand evidence filmed this week IN GAZA——

Completely agree with Steve’s comment. Israel’s use of these weapons is not illegal, but if the Palestians want to know exactly what they are perhaps Israel should demand also where the Palestians get their rockets from. Does anyone know ? The rockets are provided by Iran who has sworn (like Hamas) to destroy Israel and anyone who thinks Hamas is not Iran’s proxy for this obviously doesn’t understand that the Arab countries surrounding Israel do not just act alone. Maybe Hamas can tell Israel more about Iran’s nuclear bomb that they are planning to use against Israel. Anyone who thinks Hamas and Iran are peaceniks has been watching too much biased television. Except television is never biased, is it ?

Your question to Terry & Graham"Where was your righteous indigantion for those eight years? ...or is it OK to kill Israelis? (You have a “good reason” why it’s OK, no doubt ...)” would have some credibility if you asked yourself that question in reference to Palestinians. I abhor all violence, but Israel’s violent occupation is conveniently ignored by you; the oppressive actions at borders, the stealth of monies and other means of survival, including the destruction of orchards, olive trees etc, and homes etc knocked down just to punish a few - same tactics were used by Hitler towards the Jews! How quickly Israels forgot! Now they’re the oppressors; they’re doing the terrorizing, including using heavy tanks to squash homes and those living in them or protestors squashed & killed!Tell Israel to hand back stolen lands for a start, and allow those driven out 60 yrs ago to return, rather than living in poverty in other lands. The truth is emerging! The BS doesn’t work!

Steve, as I’ve asked before, what is a “terrorist”?I call the actions of Israel’s occupation terrorist activities. Israel has taken over ever increasing amounts of Palestinian land, built that monster of a Wall (and refused to follow UN resolution and pull it down)occupied, harrassed, killed, maimed, destroyed thousands during the time you speak of.I note that you choose not to include the deaths of Palestinians - how convenient. HAMAS were elected and the US was determined from the outset to not allow them to form government. It’s US style democracy, both in Palestine, Venezuela, El Salvador etc.Democracy? It’s a joke! The horrific weapons have US brands on them, supplied with the billions of US taxpayers’ dollars over many years. The hypocrisy is nauseating!

JERUSALEM // For four days running, an ambulance has driven 15-year-old Amira Ghirim from Shifa Hospital in Gaza to the Rafah border in the hope that she will be allowed to cross into Egypt and then on to France, where she has been promised emergency surgery.
Amira’s left arm and thigh were crushed and her internal organs damaged by falling rubble when a shell hit her home in the Tel al Hawa neighbourhood of Gaza City in the final days of Israel’s offensive. The attack killed her father, brother and sister, leaving her an orphan.
But, despite her urgent need for surgery, Amira has been turned away at the border each time, said her aunt, Mona Ghirim. “Each morning we arrived at the crossing and the Egyptian soldiers cursed us and told us to go away.”

Air bourne detination of these incidinary devices is not the best way to “illuminate a target or create smoke” Flares and smoke grenades would do a better job, without the potential of burning children to death and they are cheaper.

Israeli illegal use of chemical weapon on civilians.
White phosphorus is fired into the air from airborne or land vehicles where it bursts into thousands of phosphorus crystals that form white-looking clouds. The crystals blow and fall gently down. But if they touch skin they burn into it, boring holes deep into the body without extinguishing. It will only stop burning when deprived of oxygen. An agonizing death is frequent.
“...a three-year-old girl who had been extensively and deeply burned, in some places revealing the bones. The dead girl’s injuries were consistent with those attributed to the chemical weapon, doctors said.

By BRADLEY S. KLAPPER – Jan 13, 2009” at http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j2vQ8GynRSG8lBEQir4RtXL9Ib2AD95MLHHG0
GENEVA (AP) — The international Red Cross said Tuesday that Israel has fired white phosphorus shells in its offensive in the Gaza Strip, but has no evidence to suggest the incendiary agent is being used improperly or illegally.
...“In some of the strikes in Gaza it’s pretty clear that phosphorus was used…But it’s not very unusual to use phosphorus to create smoke or illuminate a target. We have no evidence to suggest it’s being used in any other way.”
[The Red Cross] said that using phosphorus to illuminate a target or create smoke is legitimate under international law, and that there was no evidence the Jewish state was intentionally using phosphorus in a questionable way, such as burning down buildings or consciously putting civilians at risk ..

Well-meaning Australians should be wary of supporting local groups purportedly assisting victims of the recent conflict in Gaza. If the “aid” assists the Hamas terrorist regime there, it will have the opposite of the intended effect, because it will prolong the conflict and the suffering of innocent civilians on both sides.
We should call for Hamas to renounce terrorism and join civilised society. Providing any support that may in effect assist the Hamas regime will only encourage more terrorism and violence, and thereby prolong the death and suffering on both sides of the conflict.

Terry and Graham
Hamas and similar terrorist groups have conducted a campaign of suicide bombings, drive-by shootings, stabbings and rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli civilians since 2000. In that period, over 1,200 Israelis have been killed, 7,000 injured and 900,000 held to ransom and traumatised by this campaign of terrorism.
Where was your righteous indigantion for those eight years? ...or is it OK to kill Israelis? (You have a “good reason” why it’s OK, no doubt ...)

The inhumanity of this action by the Israeli people inflicted by their military on other human beings must be the equal to any atrocities ever committed against human beings by other human beings.

The only thing more disgusting than the mind that comes up with weapons such as these are the people who use them.
Civilians should never be considered “Collateral damage” in a conflict.
