Under the radar - secret flights to torture
16 June 2006, 12:06PM
Amnesty International has revealed a covert network of secret prisons and flights to torture operated by the US in its "war on terror". Illegal under international law, victims are transported under a cloak of secrecy to detention facilities in countries with a proven record of torture, such as Egypt, Jordan or Syria.
This at the request of the US and outside any legal framework to ensure the safety of the victims. This practice is called rendition and Amnesty International reveals the stories of the victims, how the information was pieced together and the complicity of some European countries in facilitating these flights to torture.
