Hicks gets hearing - justice still denied
29 March 2007, 12:15PM
After five long years without access to a fair trial by international standards and allegations of torture and ill-treatment, the fact that proceedings are finally underway before the military commission must be a relief for David Hicks and his family.
Amnesty International believes David Hicks has been denied justice. The military commission is a shabby show trial and David Hicks has pleaded guilty to trumped-up charges in a kangaroo court.
What transpired this week looks more like an exit strategy from a source of diplomatic tension rather than of judicial proceedings at which justice would be either done or be seen to be done.
David was arraigned on Monday 26 March 2007 and faced the charge of 'material support for terrorism'. He has pleaded guilty to one part of the charge material support to a terrorist organisation. He has pleaded not guilty to the second component of the charge ֖ material support for a terrorist act.
