NSW Branch Committee

The Branch Committee is responsible for leading and planning for the branch, and provides support and motivation to NSW members. All AIA NSW members are eligible to stand for election and to vote for the Branch Committee.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Branch Committee

The Amnesty International Australia New South Wales (AIA NSW) Branch Committee comprises elected members of AIA NSW who are responsible for governing the branch. Elections occur once a year at the branch annual general meeting. All AIA NSW members are eligible to stand for election and to vote for the Branch Committee.

The Committee's responsibilities include:

Leading and planning for AIA NSW

  • Developing an annual plan and budget for AIA NSW
  • Approving events and campaign activities that AIA NSW members wish to undertake
  • Representing AIA NSW within Amnesty International Australia and externally
  • Overseeing the use of AIA NSW's resources
  • Communicating with the National Executive Committee about matters that affect AI NSW or that are raised by AIA NSW members.

Supporting and motivating members through:

  • Promoting member training and education
  • Planning the medium to long term development of activism in NSW
  • Informing AIA NSW members about particular human rights issues
  • Informing AIA NSW members about Amnesty International’s activities, policies and opportunities for involvement with AIA
  • Making use of a buddy system to link the Branch Committee with AIA NSW groups and networks.

What Is Involved?

The Branch Committee meets once a month (these meetings are open to all AIA NSW members). Members of the Branch Committee should be prepared to attend each monthly meeting (by phone if necessary) and to be well-prepared by reading any papers provided before the meeting. Ideally, Branch Committee members choose one or two roles or projects to work on between meetings, either by working directly on the project, by acting in an oversight role, or by just being a point of contact. The time involved is very flexible; it may vary from a few hours a week to a few hours a month depending on a committee member’s availability and interest.
