As in previous years Amnesty held a stall at the Big Day Out to promote human rights. This year our focus was on the Australian Human Rights Act. Five brave volunteers manned the stall in the oppressive heat. In spite of the heat it was a successful day.
Loads of excited people came to visit our stall. Many walked away with 'I heart human rights' tattoos and stickers. Hundreds of people signed our petition for the Australian Human Rights Act. Over 250 people signed up for our weekly e-newsletter. We received a few dozen postcards including submissions on the Australian Human Rights Act. These postcards will be collated and incorporated into Amnesty's submission as part of the Human Rights Act consultation process. This helps give us an insight into the rights everyday Australians would like to see protected.
After a long, hot day - one volunteer even got heatstroke - we packed up the stall and joined the rest of the crowd to enjoy the music. Thanks to Madeline Eades, Cale Johnson, James Fehon, Meaghan Blake and Jenny Leong for volunteering their services at the Big Day Out.
