Michela, activist at heart
Michela Caselli has been working at Amnesty International Australia for five months in her role as a Stop Violence against Women Campaign Assistant. In the first of a new series, we take a look at some of the people who help AIA tick.
Michela’s work at Amnesty is currently focused around the Stop Violence against Women campaign, and is occasionally involved with her local Manly group. Michela will be working at a number of Stop Violence against Women stalls over the next few months which aim to involve the local action group and the local public in order to inform and engage in dialogue, to ensure the Federal government will fund the National Plan of Action in this year’s budget.
In broader terms, Michela explains that her role involves, “contacting local groups and volunteers, explaining what we are keen to do and making it possible. That means dealing with local councils for locations, with local radio stations and newspapers for media coverage, and finally building up a volunteer’s roster.”
So what initially inspired Michela to volunteer with us?
“I was inspired by the direct connection that Amnesty has with local communities and the large power the communities have in the organisation’s existence,” she says. “The most satisfying part of my job is coming into contact with different kinds of people, topics and giving the opportunity to the volunteers to express their creativity and passion. Ultimately my main goal is to do the best job I can and create a ground where volunteers can campaign enjoying themselves.”
