Boundless Plains Shared?

Children in detention
Children in detention

On Tuesday 16 June Amnesty International and NSW Young Lawyers hosted a discussion about current views towards refugees, focusing on the irony of two lines from the second verse of the national anthem: “for those who’ve come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share.” The event was a great success with a turnout of around 180 people and thought-provoking views and opinions voiced by the five high-profile speakers; Professor Mary Crock (Professor of Public Law, University of Sydney), Shane Prince (Barrister and Co-convenor of Labor for Refugees), Lisa Pryor (Author 'The Pin Striped Prison' and Sydney Morning Herald Columnist) and Dr Graham Thom (Amnesty International Australia's Refugee Coordinator). With respected former ABC journalist, John Highfield, facilitating the forum and further discussion over drinks and nibbles afterwards, the entire night was an interesting and important Refugee Week event.
