On Thursday 16 July, the Stop Violence Against Women (SVAW) Network hosted a Roundtable to discuss the National Plan of Action to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children. The event was attended by representatives of a range of women’s organisations as well as interested individuals. There were presentations from the SVAW Network as well from the NSW Women’s Refuge Movement and Women’s Legal Services NSW. Topics of discussion included the underfunding of women’s services, the need to harmonise laws regarding violence against women and the specific needs of remote-area Indigenous women experiencing violence. The National Plan is set to be implemented next year. It aims to address violence against women through an all-of-government approach and changes to primary prevention, service provision and prosecution. Amnesty has been campaigning for a national plan since 2005. The NSW SVAW Network has contributed by lobbying individual ministers, holding public events and collecting hundreds of letters of public support.
