Formed in 1996, we are a group of AIA members, working in and with the corporate sector, supporting and actively assisting companies that wish to embed the protection of human rights in their operations.
Just ask co-founder and national convenor Rohan MacMahon, who has campaigned on a variety of human rights topics, including those geographically based (China, Burma), industry based (mining, oil & gas, and manufacturing) and specific initiatives (efforts to reduce violence against women). He represents AIA on the advisory groups for the Corporate Responsibility Index in Australia, and on the Total Environment Centre’s Green Capital program. Rohan’s inspiration for founding the Business Group comes from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that 'every organ of society' should respect and protect human rights. The Business Group has found that many corporations lack an understanding of human rights and of the positive role they can play in supporting human rights protection.
Get involved! You could find yourself organising engaging seminars such as “Women’s Rights, a Corporate Perspective”, assisting the St James Ethics Centre improve its methodology for its Corporate Responsibility Index, or writing articles for publication in the Ethical Investor Magazine.
Join us on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30pm at George’s Cafe Piccadilly, ground floor Piccadilly Centre, 210 Pitt Street, Sydney. For more information email Rohan MacMahon or Fiona Bachmann.
