Homebake 2009 in Sydney
The power of Amnesty International is through the public who stand up for breaches of Human Rights both in their local and international community. Becoming aware of when and how such actions happen empowers the community to make informed and conscious decisions to support Human Rights.
Amnesty International Australia has a wide range of campaigns running at any time and it is the Outreach Team that aims to get the word out about these to the community, to raise awareness and affirmative action. This is done by the team getting the message out there physically by meeting people, providing information about campaigns, asking them to think about Human Rights and to sign up to campaigns.
The most recent Outreach event was to attend 2009 Homebake festival at the Domain in Sydney on 5 December, to which 45,000 people attended. The day was great both for the people attending the concert to see the best of local Australian Music and for Amnesty as the outreach team targeted the campaign to Stop Violence Against Women, calling on people to sign up for Support Women’s rights in Papa New Guinea and to write letters to our new state Premier on the issue.
The weather was great and the music even better as the Outreach Team managed the Stall and invited anyone to come along and sign up to the campaigns and talk about the issues. Many people followed that invitation and took the challenge to think about what they could do to uphold Human Rights both in Australia and internationally.
The Outreach team would like to send out a big thanks to everyone who came and visited the Homebake stall and are looking forward to more successful events and campaigns in the future. See you all next time!
Feel free to contact the Outreach team if you would like to get involved in future events.
