Amnesty International is honoured to be hosting the ‘Speaking Out Tent’ at this year's Yabun Festival and is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with the running of the event.
Held annually on Survival Day, January 26, the Yabun Festival is an all day Sydney celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. It is renowned as one of the most important Indigenous music events in the country, showcasing a wide wealth of creative talent and boasting a dynamic program that brings together live entertainment, art and craft, dance, politics, literature, information stalls and activities for kids.
In 2009, over 10,000 people attended Yabun and it is anticipated that numbers will grow.
The ‘Speaking Out Tent’ is designed to create awareness in the community of human rights issues facing Indigenous Australians and to offer an opportunity for all Australians to play a part in providing recognition of and support for Indigenous rights to lands, water, culture and history.
For many people, this is sometimes the only chance they get to join esteemed speakers and local leaders to discuss issues in an open forum style that allows dialogue between speakers and audience.
If you would like to assist on the day, please contact the Outreach Team with your availability (9am - 1pm or 1pm - 5pm).
We will be hosting an information session for volunteers about the event as well as Amnesty's Demand Dignity Campaign prior to the festival.
