2009 was an inspirational year and Amnesty International Australia supporters have a great deal to be proud of. In spite of the global financial crisis, we ended the year with more supporters than ever before. And thanks to your commitment, energy and determination, we also broke through the target of 200,000 campaign actions. That's twice as many actions as were taken in 2008!

To welcome the new year and celebrate the achievements of 2009, Amnesty International Australia have asked a handful of its campaigners to share their greatest moments of 2009.

Campaigners sharing their greatest 2009 moments include Community Campaigner Jenny Leong, Indigenous Rights Campaigner Rodney Dillon, National Director Claire Mallinson, Refugee Coordinator Graham Thom, International Researcher (Pacific) Apolosi Bose and International Researcher (Cambodia) Brittas Edman. To read their inspiring stories visit our Greatest Moments 2009 page.

As an Amnesty supporter, we invite you to also share you own greatest human rights moment of 2009.

Thank you for making 2009 happen. We look forward to having you onboard for an action packed 2010!

I wrote on 18th March to our Federal Member of Parliament, Jill Hall MP asking her to take action for asylum seekers, and she has responded by pressing Chris Evans to work for justice in their treatment. She is very supportive of my actions for social justice. Recently I received from her a response from Chris Evans describing the legislation that is being presented to Parliament in support of my requests for justice for refugees, including humanitarian treatment of refugee children and a change to the policy of holding them in detention. Here is an excerpt from my letter.
“I’m sure Chris Evans will receive other appeals in regard to justice for refugee children, but this is an issue that needs to be dealt with so that the media don’t distort our Government’s policies, and I think he needs to make a clear statement that the current policies are not increasing the abuse of asylum seekers.”
