On Wednesday 10th March, Amnesty International NSW partnered with International Women’s Development Agency in opening the Women’s Eye on Peace photography Exhibition. The exhibition, held as a celebration of women for International Women’s Day 2010 ran for one week and involved a selection of photographs taken by women around the world.

The opening night was a great success with the gallery packed with people from all over Sydney joining to celebrate the contribution of women to human rights and development worldwide. The audience was fortunate to hear from two women playing a significant role in this area and be inspired by their stories. Jill Parkin from Amnesty’s NSW Branch Committee spoke on her journey as a women actively engaging in a variety of social justice iniatives and inspired us all to use our influence in improving our world. Eleanor Jackson from IWDA also shared some of her experiences from working with women in Papua New Guinea. By telling of the strength and successes of these remarkable women in the midst of suffering we were encouraged to keep engaging with iniatives aimed at increasing protection for women in PNG.

Throughout the evening we were treated to some beautiful music that provided the perfect backdrop to the photograph and the speakers. Thankyou to all of the speakers and musicians as well as the volunteers from both IWDA and the Amnesty for ensuring the night ran smoothly. Special thanks must also go to Lauren Fahey, our SVAW Action Group convenor for her wonderful work in MCing the night.
