Ethnic Chin refugees from Myanmar await their fate as they were detained before dawn during an immigration raid by the Malaysia People's Volunteer Group (RELA) at the district office in Kuala Lumpur, Monday, June 25, 2007.
Graham Thom, Amnesty International Australia Refugee Coordinator and Prabha Gulati of the Asylum Seekers' Centre refuted many of the myths around this issue, including that asylum seekers are 'illegals' and rich queue jumpers who bypass poorer countries to seek asylum in Australia. Prabha pointed out that at least 60% of asylum seekers come by plane and all were treated very badly even when they were confirmed as refugees under the temporary protection and bridging visa regime of the previous Government. Question time was vigorous and everyone who came appreciated the chance to hear rational presentations on a controversial subject.
