Indigenous disadvantage is reaching new depths.
After many years the RDI has been at least partially replaced. The fact that it was ever removed has to be the most incredible indictment of the Federal Liberal and Labor government’s complete violation of Human Rights.
The really distressing outcome of the Emergency Intervention is just how much money has been spent for zero results. Most of the projects that have been funded have been ill-founded, poorly planned and implemented.
My personal favourite is the Hearing Project. Many children who had long suffered from various respiratory infections resulting in Chronic Supprative Otitis Media (CSOM) were given new eardrums. Lovely concept - but then the children went home - nothing had changed - same hygeine, nutrition, health status and same respiratory infections. I hope that maybe one eardrum remains intact….

Hi Rebekah,
Most of the recommendations of the Little Children are Sacred report have not been addressed or implemented. The NTER measures do not adequately address the human rights violations that add to the underlying causes of Indigenous disadvantage, or the risk factors for violence against children. In some cases, they have made the situation worse. What AIA is calling on is a full reinstatement of rights and protections under the Racial Discrimination Act and increasing participation of Indigenous People in the development and implementation of social and economic programs. If you are interseted in taking action on this send me through an email at to <nswaia@amnesty.org.au> and I will send you more information
