Loosely Woven
Razzle Dazzle by the Loosely Woven

August was the month for “Razzle Dazzle” a concert given by Loosely Woven - a group of 27 musicians and singers led by Wayne Richmond and organized by the Avalon Action Group of Amnesty International Australia. Loosely Woven believes that music should be a free gift and performs 3-4 annual concerts in Avalon to raise funds for Amnesty International.

“Razzle Dazzle” encompassed a great diversity of music from frivolous, fun and well known music to heart-wrenching, serious, and original pieces.

One of the most celebrated songs was “Don’t Close Your Eyes” composed, written sung and played by the violinist Kazu Milne. This song urges everyone to be aware of the human rights abuses that happen frequently in China.

This song was extremely moving and very beautiful. Another remarkable song was “Jesus on the Wire” (sung by Meredith Williams) which is about the hate-crime murder of a homosexual student in the United States.

The words of Kathleen Moody, coordinator of the event: “The concert was a great success. There was an audience of about a hundred people and everyone enjoyed the music and the free supper” (provided by the Avalon Action Group and the Avalon Baptist Church)

The Avalon Action Group had an information center in the foyer with posters and flyers; also, Wayne Richmond, leader of Loosely Woven, spoke out in support of AIA work on human rights. The Avalon group were able to get many signatures to three petitions

  • To the Malaysian Government and ASEAN to press Burma to free political prisoners and grant the 3 freedoms in Burma.

  • To the Australian P.M. on behalf of rights of Asylum Seekers

  • To the People’s Republic of China Government in support of urgent action for prisoner of conscience and Uighur website editor Dilixiati Paerhati
