This an introductory course for anyone who's ever been curious about what International Law is, who it applies to, and how it's enforced. No prior knowledge is necessary.
Speakers:
Diana Masen has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Technology, Sydney and is currently undertaking a Masters of International Law at the University of Sydney. While working in the corporate law area, Diana's main interests are immigration and refugee issues.
Dr Shawkat Alam has a PhD from Macquarie University. His research examined International Law and Environmental Law and their impact on human rights issues. During his five year association with Macquarie University, Shawkat’s research has focused on the inter-relationship between trade, economic growth and human rights and the impact of these on the global quest for sustainable development. Shawkat lectures in the areas of International Law and Human Rights Law and supervises PhD students in these areas. He has a particular interest in the WTO and sustainable development.
Kiran Grewal is a qualified solicitor who has worked in the area of commercial and immigration law in Australia. She worked in the legal department at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in the UK from mid 2005 to mid 2006 and is the author of the Amnesty report entitled, "Serbia (Kosovo): The Challenge to fix a failed UN Justice mission" released in January this year. In 2006 Kiran spent 3 months working at the UN Special Court for Sierra Leone as a trial monitor and senior researcher for the University of California, Berkeley. Kiran is currently lecturing in socio-legal studies at the University of Sydney and completing her PhD at the Institute for International Studies, UTS on the topic of ethnicised gang rape and nationalism.
Cost: $50/$25 for the course of six or $10/$5 per session. Payment in advance is requested
