On Friday 13 August ‘Comfort Woman’ survivor Gil Won Ok will speak out in Sydney about her experience of sexual slavery during World War II and her incredible journey from war crimes victim to international women’s human rights campaigner.
During World War II more than 200,000 women, some as young as 12 years old, were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military. More than 60 years later, women like Gil Won Ok have still not received an adequate apology, let alone compensation, from the Japanese Government. For these women, the nightmare of WWII has never ended. Gil Won Ok is still fighting for justice and recognition of her suffering as a military sex slave. She is travelling the world lobbying MPs for an official apology from the Japanese Government.
Speaking alongside Gil Won Ok will be Ms Youn Mee Hyang, Director of The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan.
Both women are in Australia thanks to the support of Amnesty International Australia’s Human Rights Innovation Fund.
This event is co-organised by Friends of “Comfort Women” in Australia and Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Research Centre and the Indian Ocean and South Asia Research Network at UTS.
To RSVP please email fcwaustralia@gmail.com with “Sydney Event” in subject line.
Be there at 12 pm for a 12:15 pm start.
