Avalon
Avalon Action Group of AIA has been going for many years.
We have been working to raise funds for AIA and to raise awareness of human rights abuses. We have about ten members and meet on the second Tuesday of every month in the back office of the Avalon Baptist Church, 2 George St, Avalon at 5.30pm (until about 7pm).
We hold occasional stalls at local markets. We also publicise and provide support for two or three concerts a year by the music group Loosely Woven, held in the church; these concerts raise several hundred dollars each.
We really need extra helpers in the group and would appreciate newcomers bringing their ideas and energy. If you have any inquiries, please contact us on 02 9918 6386.
Current Campaigns
We are busy writing and petitioning for most of AIA’s current campaigns including Stop Violence Against Women (SVAW), Abolition of Death Penalty, Refugee Rights, and Anti-torture.
Children's Rights Network is important to us all and we constantly write letters to try to influence governments against the cruel treatment of children. We are happy to see that Iran has legislated to stop executing minors.
Other areas of interest are Myanmar (Burma), Asia-Pacific, and Urgent Actions cases when they arise.
Past Events
THOROUGHLY THORA
The Loosely Woven concert held on Sunday, August 14th was loved by the audience, and included a diverse selection of music and songs. Every year, Loosely Woven performs for the local Avalon community, and this year almost 50 people came to join the musical event.
The programme included "Prelude for Peace", an original piece by Ian Hamilton, “Lament for Thora”, "Lady Marmalade", "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and more. The audience danced the afternoon away.
Apart from the lively entertainment, Amnesty International’s Avalon Group also raised donations for human rights. Many signed petitions to Malaysia, urging the release of the wrongfully imprisoned six human rights advocates; and to Vietnam for the release of Nguyen Van Ly, a prisoner of conscience who supported freedom of speech.
