Newtown
We are involved in letter writing and campaigning on a broad range of human rights issues. We are an active group whose members work together on various projects through monthly meetings. We also invite specialist speakers to open meetings, which we publicise locally, and we attend events at the local action centre in Chippendale. We organise and attend local events at markets and festivals to raise awareness of Amnesty’s work and human rights issues through stalls.
This is an opportunity to talk with local people about issues raised by Amnesty and suggest ways of taking action. Our current campaigns include Homelands, Refugees and the Arms Trade Treaty.
We meet:
We hold Letter Writing @ The Pub on the last Tuesday of every month at the Courthouse in Newtown. During these get-togethers we write letters, invite speakers and complete some Urgent Action cases. We hold several stalls on King Street throughout the year, as well as a stall at the Newtown Festival each November. We’re always looking for new members and new ideas, so come along and feel free to do as much or as little as you like!
Contact: Please email newtown@amnesty.org.au if you wish to join or have any questions and to check if we are meeting this month.
