The NSW Women's Rights Network seeks to involve both women and men in the campaign to raise awareness of women's human rights issues

The New South Wales Women's Network is committed to raising awareness and campaigning towards positive changes in women's human rights around the world. We focus on the protection of the rights of women within Australia and around the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. We campaign to gain recognition of the responsibility of governments to provide adequate protection for women.

Amnesty International's Stop Violence Against Women campaign has officially ended, but there are still many opportunities for campaigning, and still the need for a women's rights team which encompasses a spectrum of gender rights. At this stage we are seeking interest in being involved and building a strong group of women and men who are passionate about women's rights, with the mind to potentially expand to more of a gender mainstream team.

Currently at AIA there are no campaigns running specifically on women's rights. 2010 was the final year of a 6 year campaign on Stop Violence Against Women, and as such there is no active campaign carrying through to 2011. One of the reasons for this is that AIA is mainstreaming gender issues into all their campaigns so there should be more general awareness for gender issues, but no specific platform to advocate them from.

Next Meeting

After the previous meeting to regroup, renew our initiatives and work towards a positive direction for a women's network team, we are organising another event. This will be held on Wednesday 5 October from 6.00 to 7.00pm at the Sydney Action Centre. For more details on this event please visit: http://www.amnesty.org.au/nsw/event/26878/
