The Charters Towers Amnesty group brought attention to the human rights of women at the annual Charters Towers Community Day. This event has been running for the past 10 years and is hosted by the Charters Towers Neighbourhood Centre. The day brings together a range of service providers, charity groups, retail stalls, and community groups.
This was the third year that the Charters Towers Amnesty group has had a stall at the community day and they have always offered a great opportunity for talking with local community members about the work of Amnesty International and the activities of the group.
The focus for this year was Women's Rights. In addition to discussing these issues with members of the public, the group also displayed items made by women from the Townsville World Vision shop. The items proved to be a great way to engage with a wider range of people and to raise awareness of some of the difficulties faced by women across the world.
The group received a lot of interest from people who signed up to receive information from Amnesty International Australia. Several others completed the group's postcards declaring support for Women's Rights.
The group would like to express its thanks to the Townsville Amnesty group for providing their banner to decorate the stall.
