Egyptian women’s rights storm Woodford
- Published on 23/01/2012
Volunteers from Amnesty International Australia's Queensland/Northern New South Wales branch hit the Woodford Folk Festival over the New Year.
Woodford is a week-long music and arts festival featuring diverse artists from Australia and around the world.
Amnesty International volunteers enlisted the support of thousands of festival attendees for the women's rights in Egypt campaign. They collected petition signatures calling on the Egyptian Prime Minister to ensure human rights are enshrined at the heart of any reforms, with women being able to participate fully and freely in the political process. The response to the campaign throughout the festival was fantastic, with almost 1700 people taking action.
Festivals are always a great way to connect and engage with the wider community, to talk with people about the campaign and show them how they can make a difference.
Amnesty International Australia will continue to campaign for women's rights in Egypt at other summer music festivals, encouraging the public to take action and ensure that human rights are protected at this crucial time in the nation's history.
