Refugee and Asylum Network, QLD/NNSW

Millions of people around the world flee persecution and conflict in their homelands to seek asylum in other countries and rebuild their lives.

The Queensland/ Northern New South Wales Refugee Group is made up of passionate volunteers determined to make a difference in the community. The Refugee Group aims at raising awarness about, and encouraging advocacy, for asylum seekers and refugees' rights in our community.

Plans for 2012:

In 2012 the Refugee Group will continue the work started in 2011 on the "How to have a conversation" workshop. We will train more trainers to expand our capacity in delivering the training to activists and also community groups. Through those workshop we are focusing on encouraging people to have a conversation about asylum seekers in their network, so as to counter the widespread misinformation on this issue. We will deliver training to build people's skills and self-confidence to have a conversation with their friends, family members and colleagues.

In addition to the work on the "conversation workshop" the Refugee Group will also be involved in a number of events such as rallies and stalls around World Refugee Day (June 20) and Brisbane Multicultural Festival (second Sunday of october).

Past Actions:

In 2011 the Refugee Group participated in more than ten events ranging from stalls at community events, urgent actions and forums on refugee issues. In 2011 the Refugee Group also delivered eight 'Change the Conversation' workshops.

Meetings:

Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 6pm
