Brisbane City Letter Writing Group

The group is focused on the traditional Amnesty International action of letter writing and also concentrates on Urgent actions.

Recently, the group started working on the case of Vietnamese democracy activist Nguyen Van Ly for Amnesty’s Individuals at Risk Program. The group has also had a couple of themed letter writing meetings (for example, a meeting writing letters for Tibet during the recent crisis).

The group meets at lunchtime in a city café (currently the American Bookshop Café) on the second Monday and third Friday of each month so that members get two chances to attend one meeting a month. Most of the meeting time is taken up with writing letters. New Amnesty members are welcome to come along and get any of their questions answered about letter writing.

Past events:

  • Writing numerous letters on topics including indigenous rights and capital punishment to governments around the world.

Plans for 2009:

  • Writing letters on the case of Vietnamese democracy activist Nguyen Van Ly for Amnesty’s Individuals at Risk Program.
  • Writing letters to support a Human Rights Act for Australia and Queensland.

Meetings:

Second Monday of the month at 12 noon
Third Friday of the month at 12 noon
Café Libre, American Bookshop, 197 Elizabeth Street, Brisbane
