Australia winds up the Pacific Solution
An airline flight carrying 21 Sri Lankan asylum seekers from Nauru landed in Brisbane last Friday, putting an end to the previous government so-called Pacific Solution. The 21 Sri Lankan, approved as refugee, were the last occupants of the detention centre on the smallest worlds republic.
Refugee bargaining
An estimated 12,000 Darfuris have fled from Sudan to neighbouring Chad following heavy attacks against three villages in West Darfur on Friday and Saturday. The Sudanese refugees camping in the border region between Sudan and Chad remain in a precarious situation as they await transfer into formal campsites.
Protection visa refused for people smuggler
Immigration Minister Chris Evans has refused the protection visa application of Mr Ali Al Jenabi. His application was refused on character grounds due to his involvement in people smuggling, which was acknowledged to have been due to the need to get his family to Australia.

A family of nine Afghan asylum seekers, who have been stranded in Lombok, Indonesia for the last seven years, are to be resettled in Australia. This brings hope that the remaining ones will be coming to Australia one day as well.
Immigration Minister forced to decide on case of a people smuggler
The Federal Court has issued an order of mandamus compelling Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, to make a decision on whether to grant a protection visa to Iraqi asylum seeker and people smuggler, Ali Al Jenabi. Mr Al Jenabi has been in limbo in detention since he lodged his protection application in June 2006.
