Inquiry into Migration Amendment (Immigration Detention Reform) Bill 2009
Amnesty International welcomes the Government's commitment to reforming Australia's immigration detention system. The New Directions in Detention constitute an important and positive first step in bringing immigration detention in Australia into line with international human rights standards. However, this bill fails to address several areas of immigration detention policy where Australia remains in breach of its obligations under international law.
