Muckaty, which traditional owners call Manuwangku, is situated 120 km north of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory and is slated for a federal radioactive waste storage facility. Manuwangku, Under the Nuclear Cloud is a photographic narrative of traditional owners' connection to their land.
Photographer Jagath Dheerasekara specialises in social documentary. He created the exhibition after living in Manuwangku. The exhibit is a testimony to the resilience of the community and captures the determination of the people to keep their traditional land free from nuclear waste.
Jagath Dheerasekara received the Amnesty International Human Rights Innovation Grant in 2010 to begin work on this project.
This traveling exhibition is a collaborative project with the the Manuwangku (Muckaty) Traditional Owners, the Beyond Nuclear Initiative (BNI) and Amnesty International.
