Walkerville Group
Here you will find information on who we are, what we do now and have done in the past
Our group meets at 8pm on the first Wednesday each month.
Location: 3 Church Terrace, Walkerville SA 5081
Convenor: John Crawford Phone: (08) 8344 4978 Email: johncraw@internode.on.netThe group started in the early 1970s as an Action Group. That is a group which worked on Urgent Actions. It began with a group of busy people who found the meeting once each month provided the discipline they needed to set aside a regular time to get together and support each other in writing letters for Urgent Action cases. We still write our letters during the meeting, and make this our main task in support of Amnesty.
Changes in Amnesty group guidelines during the 1980s gave us adopted prisoners from Yugoslavia, and later East Germany. We then specialized on an allocated region as a member of the Central America Special Action (CASA) network.
Currently, in addition to our ongoing Urgent Action work, we are working on the case of Ricardo Ucan, an indigenous Mexican imprisoned after an obviously unfair trial for the murder of a neighbour in a property dispute. He was denied the help of an interpreter at his trial, his defence lawyer failed to act effectively even though there was evidence of self-defence (both were armed). These and other shortcomings in his trial resulted in him being found guilty and sentenced to 22 years imprisonment.
If you would like to join the group, please contact the convenor, John (details above and to the right of this page).
