Devonport Remembers Tiananmen
- Published on 18/06/2009
In cold and wet conditions on the morning of June 4th, three members of the Devonport group of AIA gathered to remind the people of Devonport about the events of 4/6/1989 in Beijing.
Toy tanks lined up facing 2 plastic shopping bags which drew the attention of passers-by and allowed us to explain to people what it all was about. Almost everyone we spoke to knew of the events and thought it was important that they not be forgotten. (This was probably due to the amount of publicity about Tiananmen that has been on the news and in the paper on recent days.)
We even had a passing local politician (Brenton Best) stop to talk at some length to us about what we were doing and its significance, before congratulating us as he was leaving.
Considering the weather conditions and the smallish number of people braving the rain we were able to speak to a reasonable number of passers-by. At the conclusion, our information display, together with the “Support Tiananmen Mothers” pamphlet, were taken to the Devonport library to be put on display.
