Community Organiser (Internship)

Brief description of position:
The community organiser intern assists to develop, initiate and train regional action groups and other activist structures to deliver Amnesty International campaigns. You will work with the community organiser (CO) to develop weekly and monthly work plans in line with Amnesty International's priorities.
This position reports directly to the Tasmanian community organiser.
Hours:
one day a week (10 am - 5 pm). Can be split into two afternoons 12 pm to 5 pm.
4 - 6 months starting February or March 2012.
Skills:
Do you have these skills?
- Group organising experience, for example facilitating meetings, setting agendas or an understanding of the roles of different group members.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially previous experience in drafting emails, or writing publications.
- Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word and Excel.
- Experience using the Google Suite: Gmail, Google Docs and Google sites.
- Previous campaigning experience, for example public speaking, and developing and managing relationships.
Desirable skills:
- Experience either developing or delivering training.
- Experience organising events.
- Experience working within a Governance structure.
We would ask you to perform the following duties:
Key Responsibilities
- Face-to-face campaign support: work with our stalls coordinator to engage the Hobart public on our campaigns; organise displays in libraries and schools; assist the CO to develop key moments and activities for campaigns.
- Training delivery: attend Amnesty International training; develop opportunities to deliver training to activists.
- Crisis mobilization: work with the CO to respond rapidly to international crises; set up and manage a crisis call centre in Tasmania; coordinate on-the-street responses by gaining permissions for rallies/vigils and actions.
- Data management: assist the CO with administrative reporting, data entry, photocopying, mailing and bookings.
- Website maintenance: undertake web training; update the AIA Tasmania Branch website with events and activities for the region.
- Campaign material distribution and display: maintain and organise internal displays and develop strategies and options for external displays. Develop display or filing options for campaign archives.
- Develop materials: assist local groups with the development of flyers and posters in line with publication guidelines and assist the CO with the development of regional materials.
