Their symbol of hope

The WA community campaigner is visiting regional groups in the south-west to raise awareness about the 200,000 women who were sexually trafficked by the Japanese military in WWII. From 1937 to 1945 women aged between 20 & 12 from diverse regions such as the Philippines, Singapore, Borneo, Taiwan, Malaysia and Burma were used as 'Comfort Women'. Their symbol of hope is the butterfly.

The WA branch is aiming to get 500 butterflies signed and will begin their 'Comfort Women' tour in the south west with the Margaret River group outside Coles Supermarket on Saturday July 18 from 9am to 3pm. The Margaret river group is a well established group of six highly dedicated activists.

The second stop of the 'Comfort Women' tour will be outside Denmark IGA on Friday July 24 from 8am to 12pm.

We are hoping to drum up support in Denmark to build an active Amnesty group. The third and final leg of the tour is with the Albany group on Saturday July 25 from 8am to 12pm at the Albany markets.

If you are in the south-west area and would like to join our campaign for justice for 'comfort women' please come and say hello and sign one of our butterflies. If you would like to create one of your own butterflies online please go to www.amnesty.org.au

Amnesty International is calling on the Australian government to pass a motion in the House of Representatives urging the government of Japan to:

  • Accept full responsibility for the abuses of 'comfort women'
  • Officially apologise to the 'comfort women' and their families
  • Provide adequate compensation
