The Human Rights community in Australia

27 January 2009, 01:27PM

Don't just take our word for it! There are lots of organisations calling for a Human Rights Act in Australia. Here are just some of the sites with info, ideas, competitions and videos.

Human Rights TV

  • Big brothers and a Human Rights Act? No, not the reality TV show, but watch this great clip to see the link!

The Public Interest and Advocacy Centre

  • Want to know about human rights and social security? Human rights and the environment? Human rights and education? You can find it all here. The Public Interest and Advocacy Centre site has heaps of fact sheets, available in English, Chinese, Arabic and Vietnamese.

Making films for human rights

  • Are you a film maker? Got some ideas you want to capture for all to see? Check out the film comp on this site.

The Australian Human Rights Group

  • The Australian Human Rights Group has over 50 members - Amnesty International is just one. Together we represent hundreds of thousands of Australians and together we are working for a Human Rights Act. Check out the list and what we stand for.

The Gilbert and Tobin Public Law Centre

The British Institute of Human Rights

  • The British Institute of Human Rights, who state their mission as being to "bring human rights to life". This organisation utilises the UK's Human Rights Act to ensure rights protection for all, they have produced some terrific reports and case studies of the impact the UK's Act has had upon lives in that country.

The Australian Human Rights Commission

  • Once called the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC), the Commission holds public inquiries, plays a large educational role informing Australians about existing human rights legislation, and is the body that presently resolves complaints of breaches of discrimination law or breaches of human rights as far as they are covered in Australian law.

The National Human Rights Consultation website

  • The Government's official website set up for the current consultation. Read about the people on the Committee conducting this consultation, find out when and where the public hearings will be held and more about the whole process.

MAKE SOME NOISE

In 2009, Australians called loud and clear for a Human Rights Act. Help us remind Kevin Rudd what we told him by creating some buzz on Facebook and Twitter.
