Together, over 8,000 people have signed the petition to demand that Guatemalan authorities free Bernardo – but we need to keep up the pressure.

Three years ago Bernardo was sentenced to more than seven years in prison – for peacefully protesting the construction of two hydroelectric power plants on his people’s sacred river, the water from which they rely on for survival. He continues to be unjustly imprisoned, despite the fact that there is no evidence that he has committed a crime. We must keep taking action to demand Bernardo’s immediate release.

Bernardo Caal Xol stands up for his land and his people, the Indigenous Maya Q’eqchi – but because he opposed a power plant, he’s been thrown in jail without any evidence.

We want the Guatemalan authorities to know that people around the world are watching and that we will hold them accountable. If enough people take action, we can pressure them to release Bernardo.

Send an email to the Guatemalan Embassy to demand Bernardo’s release.

When you send your email make sure to customise the first line of the main text with one of these two phrases in Bernardo’s Indigenous Language and Spanish:

  • Naqake xkawilal laa ch’ool // Solidaridad // Solidarity

  • Naqab’atz laa elik Bernardo // Libertad para Bernardo // Freedom for Bernardo
