Water is scarce in the Petorca Province of Chile, putting local communities at risk. Rodrigo and his courageous fellow activists are fighting to protect water access despite facing violent threats from anonymous individuals.

Rodrigo Mundaca is part of MODATIMA, an environmental organisation that fights to protect access to water for local communities and expose its illegal extraction by politicians and businesses.

These activists fight tirelessly to protect the rights of others, despite some of them facing harassment, death threats, physical attacks and risk of imprisonment.

They refuse to give up and we cannot give up on them. Stand with the brave and demand their protection now.

Call on the Minister of Interior and Public Security and the Attorney General to investigate these death threats and provide human rights defenders with the security and protection they need.

Thank you!

Update 08/03/18: This is now closed – thank you to the 9,000 people who took action. We will monitor Rodrigo’s situation and update supporters of any developments.

Dear Minister of Interior and Public Security
Mario Fernández Baeza

Dear Attorney General
Jorge Abbott Charme

Rodrigo Mundaca and other members of the Defence Movement of Earth, Environmental Protection and the Access to Water (MODATIMA) are facing death threats because of their work defending the right to water in Petorca Province, central Chile.

I call on you to initiate a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation into the threats and attacks against members MODATIMA, to make the results public and bring those responsible to justice.

Effective protection must be provided to Rodrigo Mundaca and all other members of MODATIMA at risk, in consultation with them and in accordance with their wishes.

It is time you publicly recognised the important and legitimate work of human rights defenders working on land, territory and the environment.

Yours sincerely,
