Alnoldy Bahari, a farmer in Indonesia, has been sentenced to five years in prison for writing ‘blasphemous’ Facebook posts.
Alnoldy is accused of ‘insulting Islam’ and spreading ‘hate speech’. Some of the allegedly offensive statements include, “I am a Muslim and I truly testify that there is no god but Allah (God). I have seen Allah, have you?”
Alnoldy is the first person to be imprisoned under Indonesia’s blasphemy laws this year, but this definitely isn’t the first time Indonesia have used the law to stifle freedom of expression. Last year Jakarta Governor Ahok was also imprisoned for allegedly ‘insulting Islam’ in a video.
Everyone has a right to peacefully say – or post – their thoughts and ideas.
